E-Verify was started five years ago as a pilot program to help businesses verify their employees work eligibility status. The free internet-based system has been on a voluntary
basis up until now. However, now all federal contractors and subcontractors will be required to use the verification system to check if their employees are legally eligible to work
in the United States. This new mandate applies to current employees already on the payroll. To date, almost 150,000 companies have signed up for the program hoping to save
thousands of dollars in fines should their company find themselves the subject of an audit from ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency).

In the past year, the number of illegal immigrants crossing the border into the U.S. has reached the lowest level of the past ten years. This phenomenon has been extrinsically associated with the actual economy, the participation of state and local police in the capture of illegal aliens in connection with ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), as well as the enormous civil sanctions that employers are facing for employing illegal aliens after the E-Verify program have been established and will allow any employer to determine whether or not the documents presented in support of proof of legal residence are valid or fraudulent.

We just received a request from the US Census Bureau asking that we complete a census survey in support of their 2007 Economic Census. Unlike the general population census, this one is offered to randomly selected businesses across the country. The responses are vital as they allow the government to extrapolate the composition of the country's business population. Should you participate?

I just came back from spending a week in L.A. and took the opportunity to informally survey the state of affairs of Hispanic small businesses in that part of the country. While there, it became evident that while it is true that times are hard, Latino business tenacity is alive and well. This appears to be the case in other parts of the country as well. Just this week for example, we learned that Austin based, Hispanic start up Cubit Planning has just received seed funding from Capital Factory. Read on ....
